If you grew up in Australia in the 80s or 90s you will definitely remember the quintessential birthday party food item: FAIRY BREAD!
I never realized this was an exclusively "Aussie thang" until my daughter's first birthday party. The American kids looked at this stuff with wide eyes; sprinkles...butter....white bread....here are all of your "naughty" food items in one deliciously fun bite! Kids love this stuff!
Ever since, for birthday parties (and actually random adult parties too) I get asked to bring "that Australian fairy bread." It hardly seems worthy of a "recipe" but there are some tips that I think are essential to getting the right taste. Firstly, keep your healthy bread for your sandwiches. I love high-quality bread (in fact I would love a shirt that says "I'm just here for the bread") but, in this case, you really need just cheap old sliced white bread...the fresher the better though.
You also need a decent spreadable butter...because who has time to wait for butter to get to room temperature?
For the last tip...read on.
- 12 slices white bread
- 3-4 tablespoons sprinkles (a.k.a. nonpareils)
- 3-4 tablespoons butter (softened)
