Australian Fairy Bread...let sprinkles reign!

Australian fairy bread...a party staple.

If you grew up in Australia in the 80s or 90s you will definitely remember the quintessential birthday party food item: FAIRY BREAD!

I never realized this was an exclusively "Aussie thang" until my daughter's first birthday party. The American kids looked at this stuff with wide eyes; sprinkles...butter....white are all of your "naughty" food items in one deliciously fun bite! Kids love this stuff!

Ever since, for birthday parties (and actually random adult parties too) I get asked to bring "that Australian fairy bread." It hardly seems worthy of a "recipe" but there are some tips that I think are essential to getting the right taste. Firstly, keep your healthy bread for your sandwiches. I love high-quality bread (in fact I would love a shirt that says "I'm just here for the bread") but, in this case, you really need just cheap old sliced white bread...the fresher the better though.

You also need a decent spreadable butter...because who has time to wait for butter to get to room temperature?

For the last on.

Australian Fairy Bread
This is the famous Australian birthday party treat that Aussies will remember from kids' birthday parties. It adds a little fun to every event.
  • 12 slices white bread
  • 3-4 tablespoons sprinkles (a.k.a. nonpareils)
  • 3-4 tablespoons butter (softened)
1. Lay out the bread (easiest if done assembly-style).2. Butter each slice well (all the way to the edges). This forms the "glue" for your sprinkles.3. Sprinkle away! The kids love to do this (expect sprinkles everywhere)...better yet, do it outside.4. Cut diagonally. This is a must...I don't know why but it's the way Mum always did it and it just tastes better in triangles!TIPS: Keep in an air-tight container for a few hours. These are not great if you make them too far ahead of time as the sprinkles will start to bleed.
